I would recommend crossing at Sarnia, then taking I-69 to Lansing, Then I-69 to I-94 and west.
We have relatives in London Canada. We live in central Tennessee, so we head north and pick up I-69 in Indianapolis and use the Sarnia route.
You will accomplish two things that way. In Windsor you will have to travel a lot of city streets to get to border crossing and you avoid Detroit entirely.
