Oregon 199 to crescent city, ca

Thought I had this all figured out.. but now I learn 199 probably isn't a good road for 40foot plus tow...

We are trying to get from Ashland, ore area to Brookings...
Think we'll have to drive up i-5 to catch 42 and cut over at Bandon...
Any other suggestions??

Thanks

  • Thanks... no problem apparently...
We really didn't want to go the long way. Can't be any more fun than Echo Summit at Lake Tahoe and we do that many times each year.
  • anybody that can't drive a 40 footer with a toad on this highway should have their
drivers license restricted to a mini cooper.
  • Driven that road a million times 40+' towing. Log trucks roll that road every single day.
  • Hubby's old stomping ground. Yes, there are a few curves but its completely drivable with your rig.

Yes, stick with 199, nothing wrong with it, I don't know who told you not to take it, but they either don't know how to drive, or are seriously paranoid, as cpaulsen said, truckers use it every day.
  • 199 is one of the better roads between I5 and 101 in Oregon. Best route to Brookings from where you are now.

Pass up 197 and continue on 199 to 101.
  • Just drove it Thursday in a 40 footer towing. Scenic drive with some slow areas. Would do it again.
  • I have used it for many years......parts of it are slow....some tight corners but truckers use it everyday. From Grants Pass to Crescent City only takes a couple of hours...I-5 to 42 to Bandon will add way over an hour to that time. The road is fine.
