Oregon coast to Maryland-August

Goodsam gives you the distance between each stop - I just starting using it as Trips and Streets is no longer made.

I plan the trip from beginning to end and then use the directions section to find the cut off point for the daily miles I prefer to drive,I then search for a campground around that point

I bought and tried Delorme but like goodsam better

I'm not sure of your rig, but I think you will find that driving 600 miles in 8 hours is unreasonable. That calls for AVERAGiNG 75 miles an hour. Given that you are likely going to have to make at least 1, and more likely 3 or 4 pit stops for gas, potty, eat, etc., there is legally no possible way to accomplish that.

If you managed to do it with a single stop for 20 minutes, without ever encountering traffic, you'd have to drive a tad over 78 miles an hour. If you needed 3 such stops, again without encountering anything else to slow you down, you would need to be driving 85.7 mph.

My own experience has shown that going 60-65 mph for safety while towing on the interstates yields an overall average of just over 50 for the day. Your mileage may vary, but I suggest you consider cutting back a bit on your goal here.

Oregon to Maryland and back, is doable in 3 weeks, but not if you plan to make any stops whatever that are not essential, and you will end the drive totally exhausted. There is no way I would be able to keep up a pace like that for even 1 week, so you'd have proven yourselves better men than me.

If you can squeeze another week your trip will be much more enjoyable - remember it takes a full two weeks of hard driving just to get to/from the east coast - and there is a boatload of stuff to see between the two Oceans.

For what it's worth - take some time and jot down the things you want to see - then go through the process of eliminating those that don't work with the time constraints you have. Take one route - east and select another wehn you come West to maximize what's available to see.

I'm with rr2254545....there is just no way you can make this trip in an rv in the limited amount of time you are showing. I drove my daughter from Sou Cal to upstate New York, and it was 5 solid days of all-day driving...each way.

The only way you can make this trip in an rv is to take as much time as possible, stopping and staying a day or two in the different areas you want to visit. This will, in my estimate, take at least 30 - 45 days for a round trip...minimum!

I believe your plan is unrealistic at best.

Don't know what RV you are using, diesel or gas? I start my long trip planning by just using a regular map on my laptop. My I-phone has a Pilot Truck Stop App with a trip planner that works really good. I use that for getting my miles between two points, plus it gives me all my available places to fuel.

We never do "RV poker runs" like you are planning. We keep our miles per day between 250 and 325. I like to hook up around 9am and get off the road by around 3 or 3:30pm. But we are full time and retired. I understand you have a deadline and destination to make.

You will beat yourself to death if you attempt to travel 600 miles per day in an RV. But if you think you want to try it, then pick a good safe looking Walmart as an overnight stop. It will be easier stopping and sleeping there at 8pm as compared to trying to navigate a strange campground late at night.

I would try to keep my miles per day down to 400. If you want to get up early and leave each day you can still make your destination before dark probably.

Thanks everyone for the input. In retrospect I bsolutely agree 600 miles is too ambitious. I guess I was just being overly hopeful. I tend to drive right at speed limits and do like to stop for the sights so the 250-350 is probably much more realistic. This might not be the trip.

If you have friends you trust with RV - you might consider driving to East Coast and fly back .. they can fly to East Coast and drive back.
