Hwy 20 bridge east of Sweet Home to close for 6-8 weeks.
Highway 20 out of Sweet Home is not a very RV friendly road. It's do-able but might not be pleasant. It has a lot of rough miles and some steep grades. 20 after the 126 intersection is a great road.
Highway 20 coming out of Newport, Oregon will be having night time closures starting Aug 1 st or so. - SAR_TrackerExplorerHwy 20 will be closed for construction August 2 thru end of September. See link for details.

I-5 should have been built through Klamath Falls and crossing the Cascades where Hwy 58 is. But I was not in-charge. - cpaulsenExplorer II

I live in Bend and have been driving from Central Oregon to I5 for 30 years. Take 22 from Salem. Easy road, nice scenery. 26 from Portland can be a zoo with traffic from I5 to Sandy.
X2! - ORbikerExplorerI drive to the Bend area almost once a week for work.126 is a bit steeper then 58. Both are a beautiful drive. Most trucks take 58, especially if south bound.
- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIIt all depends where you want to leave I-5.
I just plugged in Roseburg, OR to Bend, OR using the above link of 'Flattest Route' and it took me via 138 to 97
I tried Cottage Grove, OR just a little ways north and it used 58 to 97.
So it depends......

x2 much nicer route. - Marine_By_ChoicExplorerYou can always go east from Portland to The Dalles and miss the mountains! Then south on 97 to Bend and K-Falls.

- MikeInOregonExplorerThe best route from I5 is highway 126 from Eugene to highway 20 that leads to Bend, then highway 97 to Klamath Falls. You will still be driving over the Cascade Mountains, but there is no way to avoid them. Other routes such as highway 20 all the way from Albany are more curvy and slower. Highway 22 from Salem would be my second choice if approaching from the north. If starting from Portland, then highway 26 to highway 97 in Madras is the best route.
