We were in Alaska this summer. We met many caravan people and they were all having a great time. We met many independent travelers and they were having a great time. The caravans worked well for people who require a lot of social interaction - there was always someone to talk to.
But, since we occasionally stayed in the same campgrounds right next to them, we got to socialize with them. The advantage we had, being on our own, is that we got to boondock a lot away from the crowds and we got to move whenever we felt like it. This worked in our favor this summer due to fires all over the place - we changed our itinerary on the fly due to closures but were able to go back when the skies cleared. Same with weather/rain. Caravans have a set time and place for everything - they don't much change it.
