In Haines, we met my cousin and his wife who "drove around" and had a great 2 1/2 weeks of touring with them until we split up. Thus, the need for a ferry schedule.
The best piece of ferry advice I've had from this forum was to spend lots of time in Sitka. We upped our stay to 4 nights but will stay longer next time.
