I like the limits! That pushes everyone to really think about what's most important to them.
The learning opportunity is priceless. I remember taking my 13 year old niece to Monterey for a day trip. When she got in the car, I gave her a map, a guidebook, a notepad, and a pen. I told her to do the same thing - figure out what she wanted to see, the priority of each, and then to work out the logistics (which to see first, second, etc. and which to skip). I remember her comment afterwards: this is just like those word problems in math.
