Navegator> No problem with long term rental or owning a house as long as you turn in your FMM before 6 months and get a new one. It is legal to purchase a home with an FMM. There are real problems with upgrading from an FMM. After having a Residente Temporal you supposed to apply for a Residente permanente . With an RP you cannot drive a foreign plated car. One could get a new Residente Temporal but it is expensive and you have to apply outside the country. The Gov. goofed when they made those new rules. The idea was to make it easier for foreigners but the law of unintended consequences kicked in.
