As Mr: Russ said there is protectionism involved, the US has it for certain products, otherwise everything would be cheap Chinese junk, Mexico opened the border to the automakers prior to that they had to have factories, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler already were manufacturing some parts so technically you could bring one of those makes in, later on Renault started a factory and you had french cars, after that I believe Nissan started a factory, of course Volks Wagen has had a factory in México for a long time, my wife worked for VW Mexico for several years.
Mexico needs to protect that industry, it is a source of jobs there are also factories of parts that supply the auto industries in the states, older vehicles are OK, I had a Mitsubishi Montero for more than 20 years, until it was cheaper to buy the Suzuky than repairing the montero.
Well it is cerveza time.
