PA Route 487 South from Ricketts Glen SP

Question

We have a reservation for Ricketts Glen SP. From what we've read, coming into the park from the north via Dushore PA should be OK. However, all mapping programs route us to our next destination by going south on Rt. 487. Apparently this is a very steep and winding road, the kind that my wife really doesn't care for. How bad is this road? Should we try to avoid it? Our next destination is in northern NJ so I guess that's why we're routed south on 487. All ideas and alternate routes if necessary will be greatly appreciated. We have a class B van, not too large and heavy.

Typically the problem with that road is due to rvs not have the power or the brakes to go up or down the road - the grade is pretty significant.  There are a few tight curves but nothing that couldn't be handled by a class b.  We did it with a truck and trailer, no problem. There aren't really drop offs or edges - it is mostly tree lined.  Maintain the speed limit or less and there should be no scary parts.

According to the sign at the top, it is a 2 mile, 18% grade. I have no problems either way (other than being slow) hauling my 3000 lb trailer up or down the hill with a RAV4, but if you are under powered, it can be an ordeal going up, and, of course, important to depend on engine braking going down.

As dahkota says, it isn't a cliffhanger view wise, just steep.

This is my favorite state park. The hike along the waterfalls, particularly in the fall is unmatched.

We went down with our Class C a few years ago (after coming in to the park from the north). Very steep and lower gears are a must to save the brakes.

What really surprised us was seeing a lumber truck loaded with logs going up the hill.

Thanks so much for the replies, and I'll certainly remember to use lower gears when traveling south on 487 after leaving the park. We've read a lot of good things about Ricketts Glen and are looking forward to our trip.
