Parking outside of Chicago

We are planning on visiting friends in Chicago during our cross country trip. However, we do not really want to drive into Chicago.

Does anyone have recommendations as to safe places to park around the surrounding Chicago area, where we can jump on public transportation or taxi into Chicago for a couple days? We just have a 22' Class-C RV.

Thanks in advance.
  • Check out the METRA station locations. They are scattered all around the burbs and some may accommodate parking for a Class C. The Metra system provides convenient, safe, timely train service all around the Chicago area with ample parking in most of their locations.

    Enjoy Chicagoland.
  • You didn't say what part of Chicago.

There are two Illinois State Parks close to public transport that could work for you.

Chain o' Lakes SP near Spring Grove - commuter train from Fox Lake.
You'll need a taxi to the station.

Illinois Beach SP near Zion - commuter train from Waukegan.
You can take a "Pace" bus to the station.

  • Check out campgrounds in NW Indiana and leave the RV there. They may have suggestions on transportation other than renting a car.
  • There are no rv parks in close proximity to The Big Windy.
