SAT did a study last year and came to the conclusion that fly-in tourists to Cancun, Cabo San Loco, Puerto Vallarta etc., bring in - in excess of ten thousand times the dollar amount that overland tourism brings to the entire country. Fly in visitors frequently blow thousands of dollars in just a few days then are airlifted out of the country. This shocks the sensibilities of many RV tourists who believe their dollars and loonies have earth shaking consequences.
MINING not tourism is Baja California's chief revenue generator. ALL aggregate Tourism is number six behind agriculture, fishing, etc. Two canneries bring in 10,000 dollars per day in lobster, caracol, abulon, jurel, bonita, almejas, etc. The gypsum mine on San Marcos island alone generates 100 times the revenue of all combined overland tourism.
Time to stand back and take a deep breath about RV tourism impact on the average Mexicano. Too few RV'ers spend a winter parked in a remote impoverished village where their money WOULD have a significant impact. How and where new pesos are applied is key. Most RV'ers head for tourism central where much of their money is funneled into the purse of wealthy Mexicans.
