Pine Mt. GA over to I-65 North - best route?

Currently south of Montgomery, AL. On our way back to SW Michigan and we decided to swing over to Pine Mt. GA to visit Calloway Gardens and the area for a few days beginning tomorrow. Will take I-85 over that way, but want to avoid retracing our route back through Montgomery. Don't want to go home via I-75.

Looking at the map there's US431 that heads north to I-20 and then west to Birmingham, AL. There's also US280 that goes northwesterly to Birmingham. What's the quicker of the two? Is there a better route?

PS: On second thought should I go I-185/I-85 up to Atlanta then north on I-75 and catching I-24 up to Nashville? Will be traveling this coming Sunday.

Just one thing to add to what americanrascal wrote, when you come into Rome take US-441/GA-20 toward Cartersville to GA-loop 1. This is the bypass and will keep you out of downtown Rome. GA-loop 1 will be the big left after Wal*Mart. It's about 6.4 miles north up to GA-53

Yes Yes yes excellent point-- thanks!!

Not sure if this is too late but can offer this. I assume you are wanting to get through Nashville? We live right near Callaway Gardens and travel through Nashville to Clarksville several times each year in pour Class a and toad.

Take US 27 north to Rome. ( a small bit of stop lights around LaGrange and a bit at Carrolton but you'll get through it easily and fast) At Rome take GA 53 to Calhoun and enter I-75 north to I 24. The I- 24 to Chattanooga. All 4 lane.

After trying many different ways for the past 30 years this is the best 4 lane all the way from LaGrange to Nashville- 55-65mph all the way with just a few light in towns. Your only on 75 for a short time until I-24 in Chattanooga and you stay away from Atlanta. Fastest way and no traffic.Stay out of Atlanta unless you like wicked traffic, rough roads and congestion.

My experience is that I-65 in N Alabama is too rough, and 431 is just too slow mountainous and monotonous. US 280 isn't bad to Birmingham but 65 from Birmingham to the Tennessee border is a wee bit rough! I have sworn it off as a route for us to Nashville.

PS check out downtown LaGrange ( a few minutes north) while on Pine Mountain they have really spiffed it up -- nice restaurants, museum , Callaway Estate,Antiquities museum etc. Also worth visiting there is Warm Springs and Roosevelt's Little White house

(Its best to take 27 to I-185 north from Pine Mountain to its end then go about 1 mile southwest on I-85 to the LaGrange exit and follow GA 109 west to US 27. That avoids a lot of the southern part of LaGrange and gets you moving on the 4 lane 27 quickly)

Thanks. This looks like a good route. We are at the Pine Mt. RV Resort and just went into LaGrange this evening for dinner. US27 appears to be 4-lane all the way north from LaGrange.

I agree that I65 is rough around Birmingham, north and south. Getting to Nashville this way will make the best use of our time on the road. I appreciate the input.
