An interesting stop on the way from Chief Joseph Pass going towards Wisdom and Wise River is the Big Hole Battlefield. You will learn a lot about the Nez Perce and their famous trek from their homeland in Idaho and Oregon over to the Bear Paw Mountains, where Chief Joseph declared he would fight no more; it's a tragic story that is well worth your time. Good camping at the USFS May Creek campround just a couple miles west of the battlefield; one of our favorite places.
