But the good thing about mountain storms is they are predictable many days out. They generally don't just pop up without warning. So if you want to take I-80 just watch the weather reports and see what they say. I don't have a lot of experience over the Rockies, but at least with Donner Pass you'll be able to see several days in advance if any bad weather is anticipated, especially that time of year.
