Placerville to Ridgway, Colorado

We will be travelling through Colorado in July, and have reservations in Ridgway SP. Avoiding the Million Dollar Hwy. from Durango/Silverton in our trailer, how is the road from Placerville to Ridgway on Route 62? Thank you for any help.
  • You will go up about 2700 feet from Placerville to the top of the Dallas Divide on a steady, but not steep climb. Going down the other side is about a 6% grade for 4-5 miles. Good road with nice scenery. Not mountain driving with big drop offs or anything like that.
  • CO 62 is easier than CO 145 that you'll take to get to Placerville from Cortez (I assume that's how you're going). Both are two lane roads without significant issues. Significant traffic can be encountered from Telluride to Ridgway. Personally I wouldn't take the short side trip into Telluride from Co 145 with a trailer, as that town isn't easy to maneuver in.
  • It is a easy drive. When I lived in Durango and worked in Grand Junction I would use that stretch of road if a storm was up on the passes on 550. BTW if you have time 145 and 141 from Placerville to Grand junction is a scenic and almost deserted drive. You do meet yourself on some of the curves. Great motorcycle road though.
