Places to overnight along I-80 and 84

Will be picking up I-80 in Kearney nb and taking it to Utah, then 84 up to Seattle, in early April. Are there good places to overnight along I-80 and 84 without having to get too far off the highway? Fairly new to this, can you overnight at truck stops? Are there better places? Pulling a fifth wheel. Thx.

Depending on the size of the truck stop, yes you can usually overnight at them. Some have designated RV parking areas, but whether they can accommodate a truck/fiver combo will vary. You can try parking with the 18 wheelers, if they aren't full up, but we've had that discussion before. That's why they're called truck stops, and RVers should avoid taking up any trucker spots. Trucks will come and go and idle all night, so noise and diesel fumes may be a factor.

Big box stores are an option, like the obvious one (Walmart). They'll be signed regarding allowable overnight parking at the edges of their designated parking lot area.

Freeway rest areas will work as well. Same caveat about truck noise/fumes.

Use common sense, be creative, and you'll figure it out.
  • don0218, yeah, I know 84 doesn't go all the way in. Didn't think I had to spell out the whole route for the post. I've driven to Seattle often, just not with rv. Thanks for the tip on emigrant pass.
  • Use this site Allstays and click on the little quotation mark symbol next to the state to get a map showing the CGs in that state.
  • Uhhhh I84 does not go to Seattle. I assume your going to pick I82 to I90 in eastern Oregon just west of Pendelton? Up on top of Cabbage hill is emmigrant springs state park. About 40 miles after you cross the OR/ID border is a decent state park.
Yes, you could probably park in the back of most truck stops for the night. Truckers do it all the time. But its likely to be noisy with all the idling motors.
