Everyone's time, distance, and cost will vary because of interests, type of camping, cultural events, tours, and so forth. We went up in the summer of 2015, left W.PA the first week of June, and left Alaska via the Ferry the first week of August. We had time constraints on the front and back ends of the trip.
We also wanted to spend some time at the western parks while out that way.
Pick up a copy of the newest Milepost book to help determine sites to see, time, and distances. Might also be interested in Church's book on Alaska camping.
Sit down with all involved in the trip and decide what you want to do/see. If in Canada around July 1 (Canada Day), make reservations for your Canadian sites now. If in Alaska or the west around July 4, same thing. Consider reservations for Denali and the bus tours into the park. Some have done Denali without reservations ahead of time, but I wouldn't want to drive that far and be shut out.
Recommend you spend a few days in Banff NP and Jasper NP via the Icefields highway. Much beauty to see.
If using the Ferry at all for any segment of your trip, check the schedules, and make reservations when you are certain of dates/times. The Ferry system charges by length of RV (and toad), and whether or not you want a cabin.
Best wishes and good luck.
