Just go for it. Little planning needs to be done. The biggest expense will be fuel. Plenty of opportunities to just pull off and spend the night. The only reservations we made were at Riley Camnpground in Denali (we stayed 6 nights) and we made that just a couple weeks before our stay. If you are flexible and do not have to stay in campgrounds all the time, you will have many more options. Don't forget your Senior Pass because there are public campgrounds where you can use it but they are usually dry camping. Get the Milepost nd the Church's campground book.
