Here we go again, the armchair experts are out in force.
An American has twice the chance of being murdered in the US as he does in Mexico (I am not kidding those are the stats). However you should be aware that property crimes can be an issue.
It is never a bad idea to travel with others. Just help if you break down if nothing else. There are 2 places you can put a request in for travel buddies.

And steel pony above I have traveled by RV in Mexico with a 5 year old 2 years in a row. I am far more scared driving through LA.
I agree with your opinions about mexico but I don't ever remember in all my 45 yrs. of RVing in the United States of driving up to a CHECK POINT in the middle of no where, I was greeted by 4 armored vehicles with machine guns on top of them and 10 Mexican soldiers fully armed with pistols and riffles and being told "pull over, this is a inspection". :)
