Silly people say silly things. I think the naysayers are those who would really love to come but have some phobia about traveling outside their comfort zone.
Others are nationalists who would poo poo anything in any other country.
What's safe? People are killed in U.S. national parks, so should I avoid them?
Rvers are ripped off in rv parks in the U.S.? Should I not go to an rv park?
Rvers have their rvs stolen from their yards and storage places. Should I be afraid to park in the U.S. where my rv could be stolen?
Silly talk. While you guys are arguing over whether Mexico is safe or not, I just got back from a 50 mile drive to a small town via country roads to see a wonderful folkloric event. Ate breakfast in an outdoor market Had coffee in a sidewalk cafe. Came home and took a wonderful nap and now we are headed to the town square to watch people and have some delicious homemade ice cream.
Kid eating pizza in the market. His parents weren't worried I'd steal his identity, or kidnap and murder him. Had a great breakfast.

Drove to Comonfort, Guanajuato for a folklore presentation. No security. No nuts running around killing people in public places.

Coffee with a friend from Mexico City after the presentation. Only danger here was the delicious bread we bought to go with the coffee, too many calories.

This is where I am going right now for an ice cream and to watch people. Danger? Someone may come up to me ask me where I'm from and I'll talk too much.

So while you guys are sitting where it's hot, in an air conditioned room watching 60 Minutes and arguing about the dangers of Mexico I am taking the risk of my life. Yum, homemade Mexican ice cream. See ya!
