For historic attractions, look at L'Anse Aux Meadows at the north end of the Northern Peninsula. Its the site of a Viking Settlement about 1000yrs ago. Or visit Cupid's the oldest English community in Canada, and the archeological dig there. Right next to Cupid's is Brigus, both small communities, and vist Hawthorne Cottage. It was the home of Bob Bartlett, an early sea captain and explorer.
On your way across the island visit Twilingate to view the icebergs, and take a short drive to Crow Head for their dinner theater. Its worth it.
Take a drive down the Burin Peninsula to visit Lawn and St. Lawrence. This is where the US ships Truxton and Pollux ran aground in a storm during WWII. Hundreds of men were saved by the locals.
In St. John's, check out Signal Hill. It was part of the defences of St. John's Harbour and the site of the first Trans-Atlantic wireless signal. Don't forget Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. I have listed the major ones but their are many more.
And during the summer, many communities each have their own festivals. Enjoy local musicians, and entertainmement.
