We entered Canada at Sweetgrass last spring up to Macleod. Then the road less traveled 3 over to 22 and north to Ca1. AB 22 runs parallel to AB2, very scenic with little traffic. Spent a couple days in Banff then up the Icefield Parkway to Jasper. You could then either take the Yellowhead Highway 16 east or west. We drove east to hook up with the AB40 to Grand Prairie then west to Dawson Creek and the start of the Alaskan Highway. Had we gone west on 16 we would have picked up 97 in Prince George and north to Dawson Creek or if adventurous over to Kitwana and the Cassiar, however you miss the beginning of the Alaskan Highway as the Cassiar joins it just west of Watson Lake. We did return by the latter with a side trip to Stewart Hyder to watch the bears catch salmon.
There are only a few options once you get up North though there are several side trips if you have the time and inclination. Your best bet is to get a copy of the Milepost and review your options. The Milepost, although updated annually basically doesn't change the possible routes.
Our plan is to return in 2019 now we know where we want to spend more time and to explore those places we missed.
