A few years back we took the 5th to Elkhart for some suspension work, then caught up with some friends in Rapid City SD, and spent a day or two around Rushmore Crazy Horse (under construction)and the Black Hills. We then went to Cody, WY to the Buffalo Bill Museum http://centerofthewest.org/ . This lets you get in a visit to Yellowstone if so inclined. Great place, nice town, and the admission is for two days. Worked our way west just barely past Missoula and took 93 north to the Trans Canada, a bit west to the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, east toward Hinton AB and north on 40 to Grande Prairie. Hang a left to Dawson Creek and on to Alaska. Lots of potential routes, pick one on the way west and another on the way back.
