In 2011 we went up through Portal, ND. I think the Calgary route would have been nice. The roads were in good shape. Even the haul road up to the Arctic Circle was better than I expected. We had a popup TC and this was the only trip we ever used it for. It was a 7 long days of driving just to get to the state line via the Top of the World Hwy. There was a lot of flooding when we went up through Iowa all the way to Regina.
Take a sign or license plate for the sign posts. Check road conditions just before you leave. On our way back the Al-Can was closed, wildfire or bridge washout can't remember now. It didn't affect us as we planned coming back through Washington. Expect to be stopped for road construction, just a way of life up there.
