You said you're planning this trip for spring/summer: Don't plan on earlier than the 3rd week of May to cross the U.S. border. Things will still be closed and the beautiful lakes still frozen.
Also, I'd recommend that you stay in the U.S. as long as possible before crossing. The fuel will be a lot cheaper.
Save your U.S. siteseeing for after your drive to Alaska. You don't want to wear yourself out before crossing the border. There is so much to see in Canada and the Yukon before you even get to Alaska.
Purchase the Milepost book for history and good maps. Purchase Mike and Terri Church's book 'Alaskan Camping' for your camping bible. It includes Canada and the Yukon and RV parks, public parks and good boondocking spots in lovely surroundings.
Also study the 'Sticky' at the top of this forum page of things to do, restaurants and lots of good information.
Just before your trip go online and order the TourSaver 2/1 coupon book. One glacier cruise will pay for the book!
Have fun planning but definitely don't make a ton of reservations for the trip. The only reservations we made for the whole summer was the July 4 weekend and 5 nights in Denali's farthest campground, Teklanika. We only made those a few weeks out when we could better judge where we'd be. As it turned out, we got in the Denali area a little early for our reservations and on a whim we boondocked nearby and drove into the park early morning. We easily secured a spot for another 5 nights for 40' motorhome in Denali's front campground, Riley Creek. We then had 10 nights in Denali and saw 'THE' mountain 7 of 10 days.
