We did a western trip this summer. I recommend I-80 to Grand Island NE and then take Nebraska 2 to Mullen and then County Road 97 thru the Nebraska Sand Hills, absolutely beautiful and very desolate. In Valentine , NE go north on US 83 into SD and then west on SD 44 into the Badlands. You will love the scenery. Sounds like you have a nice trip planned.
