We take lots of garlic capsules once we hit about Mazatlan, and stay on them all winter. At least for us, it really helps, that plus avoiding the sunrise/sunset times.
When bug spray is really necessary, we use the the OFF Family in the orange pump bottle. It's pretty gentle, and not smelly, as bug spray goes. Cheaper to buy in Mexico at the grocery stores than in the US.
Take it from someone who got the "right" mosquito bite in Mazatlan in 2005, that turned into encephalitis. Do what you can to not get bitten, and if you feel weird, rush to a doctor, even on Christmas Day in Playa Azul!
