Possible Routing

Hello Everyone. I'm seeking your thoughts on safety and typical timelines for the following route. Mind you, this IS my first rodeo so Ive no concept of time, but I know that you will. Here goes: From Florida:

I-10 to New Orleans, then I-55 north to Vicksburg to Little Rock, picking up 40West at Little Rock. THEN, 40 NW to 64 then 40 again Into Oklahoma City. 83 North thru Kansas/Arkansas/Nebraska to I-80 into Scott's Bluff and then 26 Into the Tetons. Then around Jackson Hole to Coulter Bay north to Grand Canyon of Yellowstone to Junction Butte.

On the way home I thought maybe taking 90 into Rapid City/Badlands, then 29 south to Memphis, 78 south to whatever to Florida.

Thanks for your experience with this.

  • If you try to include the Black Hills in your trip don't try to do it without reservations if you will get there around August 1st. the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally basically takes up that whole month and it's all but impossible to find a place to stay in an RV or even motel.

You are talking about a lot of miles. A route planner software would be highly recommended.
  • I have been traveling west from Tallahassee since 1973. Your route sounds good to me. Last year we left on May 1 and traveled west on I-10 (& I-12 to avoid New Orleans)to Lafayette, LA. where we took I-49 to Shreveport. Then North on US 11 to village of Ida where we took US 59 to Queen City TX. We went through Texarkana on US 59/71 and intersected with I-40 at Ft. Smith/Van Buren. We went on to New Mexico before turning north (we were going to Alaska), but I have used your route and it is fine.
We usually come back east on either I-70 or I-80, then to Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville, Chattanooga, but we return to North Carolina not to Florida. Sounds like a wonderful trip. Enjoy! lizzie
  • I don't see any safety issue with your itinerary. Are you planning to stop along the way to the Tetons? If I were to do this route I'd want at least a month. You could just drive it a 10 days, but you'd never see anything. How much time do you have? There's so much to see out there.
  • "How much time..."

Minor details, sorry. I'm thinking six weeks or thereabouts. Ill be honest though, I didn't figure mileage because, I don't know how far it all is.
