Another option would be to bypass I-70 altogether.
Take US 40 through Utah into Colorado, through Craig and Steamboat Springs, to CO 14 in the Rabbit Ears/Muddy Pass area. Take CO 14 across North Park into Walden and on to Gould, up and over Cameron Pass and continue down through Poudre Canyon. CO 14 exits the canyon at US 287 north of Fort Collins, and you can take it to I-25 south to Denver.
This is a beautiful drive, and shows the diversity of northern Colorado, some of the unspoiled areas that are still a part of Colorado and what makes it special.
