Have taken both routes from/to MI many times. The post about the winds is something you need to build time for in case you have to wait out the storm. We take 5-7 days to get to Phoenix to give you an idea. To San Diego is another days drive. I don't know where you are in MI but we like traveling I69 to 70 then 57 to 55 to I40. It is usually a nice peaceful route. I sent you a private message of campgrounds we like on your southern route.
