According to the MX forums I've been reading in the last couple of years,if your vehicle and residence is in the state of Jalisco you can own and operate a vehicle on a Tourist visa. Each state is different as to the "residence status" requirements for ownership/operation.
I got this info mostly from forums in the PV and Lake Chapalla areas.
This spring I was going to buy a car in Perula but had to spend the $$ on construction issues at the Casita. The vehicle was owned by a Canadian couple who had used it for several years after purchasing it in Melaque. They always had just a tourist visa for their winter visits.
As always what one hears or sees in the internet is subject to"local" interpretation.... If anyone can find the Official Rules for Jalisco it might clear this question up.
