Your southern route will not be very challenging as far as roads go. San Jose,Santa Fe NM Carlsbad Caverns Los Angeles San Jose All pretty easy going. The grape vine is in there but just pull over to the far left lane you will have lots of company in that lane. Once you hit Portland your in it though. Banff lots of mountains Glacier lots of mountains Going through Seattle and Portland are worse that mountains but just take your time the roads are all good The mountains are all very high so relax and enjoy your trip. Not sure whether taking the toad off will help you. I hear tell those MH pull just about the same whether the toads are hooked up or not. I wouldn't know I have a fifth wheel. Last time I was in Jasper it was amazing to me that no matter where you went, no matter what you did, it was all up hill both ways :h
I'm not sure either, but on twisty and windy (both WINDING and from the WIND) roads, the toad makes maneuvering feel even more treacherous, if only for the extra length.
Where I went to college, my science classes were at the outer edge of campus, on Science Hill, and in the winter, it was definitely uphill, into the wind, in both directions. :)
