Diana -- yes, if you want to get good photos, get a digital SLR plus a polarizing filter (very inexpensive) and a tripod. Then practice at home -- it is hard to learn on the road, as I discovered. On the other hand, the point and shoot cameras are a lot more portable and are easier to use.
