- aerbus32Explorer III'm planning to be in Redding in 2 weeks. This question comes up so often, I'm planning to take a picture of the sign on 36 west that warns people about it. 299 is very RV doable. I'd recommend it. Hope your reservations are for Durango RV. Very nice. Treat yourself to the pizza place near it.
- OregonLuvrExplorerDo not take 36 west. Take 299 it is doable.
- Finally_TimeExplorerAlso don't forget the patches on patches, potholes, and washouts along the edges of 36. I used to have to drive it for work and getting paid for it is the only way I would ever drive it.
- coolbreeze01Explorer36 is an interesting route for experienced mountain drivers. Some steep and narrow areas to go with the scenery.
- korbeExploreri would use 299, not backtrrack.
- RVcrazyExplorerSince we already have ressie's in Red Bluff, going north, would you backtrack to 20 or is 299 decent? We should have waited for the responses! Thanks.
- dave54NomadFully loaded log trucks drive it.
I, however, would not drive it towing an RV.
It's a blast on a motorcycle!
Just so no none is confused, 36 east Red Bluff to Susanville is easy with a rig. No problem, a nice easy drive. - othertonkaExplorerIn other words, NO way should you take that route, too narrow and winding and once you start there is probably no place to turn around and change your mind.
Since you asked, please take the advice as offered. Hwy 20 from I5 to 101 is my choice, but 299 is also doable. - korbeExplorerAre you starting in Red Bluff? I would take either 299 or 20 to get to 101.
- RedRollingRoadbExplorerIn one word "NO."
It is a windy and narrow road. At some parts it is single lane. If you got a motorcycle go for it. Used
( still is?) a ex-CHP that said it was not patrolled after a ways out of Red Bluff. Nice views though.
