Registering a Jalisco plated car in Jalisco

I laughed when the lady expressed shock I was a Ciudadano Mexicano. She winced at the pasaporte, eyebrows lifted at my IFE ID, but relaxed when she saw mi socio de ejido chicutitan card. They can be very very picky.

Lew, I've had to show my residency card (aka, mica, FM2, immigrado) plus a valid driver's license.

Here are the requirements for Jalisco direct from their webpage. Send me a PM if you need a translation. It doesn't state any particular info for foreigners, but I can tell you that you will need proof of temporary or permanent residency (not a tourist card).

Factura endosada, con fecha de enajenación y firma del vendedor o refacturación. (presentar copias de secuencia de facturas anteriores, en caso de proceder).
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
Tarjeta de circulación original, número de placas o último recibo de pago de refrendo o tenencia.
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
Identificación oficial vigente: IFE, pasaporte, licencia de conducir.
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
Comprobante de domicilio con una antigüedad no mayor a 90 días (teléfono, luz, estado de cuenta bancario o recibo de agua) no electrónico.
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
En caso de vehículos extranjeros, documento de regularización.
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
En caso de persona moral poder notarial del representante legal (original para cotejo).
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.
Carta poder simple cuando el trámite se realice por un tercero con Identificación del apoderado, poderdante.
Presentar 1 copia, 1 original.

You should have talked to Janet at Boca Beach about this! She owns a Lot at Emiliano Zapata just out of Melaque!

She has gone through Hell with Vehicles in the last couple of Years!

She was at that "transvestite" Show We all went to!

Hint:

Start out by getting a Mexican driver license. Without it, 0% chance of registering the car. You may need to show proof of Mexican liability insurance and maintain it year-round.

Check with Spencer at Chapala Law ,he can be reached on the internet at Chapala Law,he is an attorney and very knowledgeable about these things or go on the forums at Chapala Web Board lots of info.

According to the MX forums I've been reading in the last couple of years,if your vehicle and residence is in the state of Jalisco you can own and operate a vehicle on a Tourist visa.Each state is different as to the "residence status" requirements for ownership/operation.

I got this info mostly from forums in the PV and Lake Chapalla areas.

This spring I was going to buy a car in Perula but had to spend the $$ on construction issues at the Casita. The vehicle was owned by a Canadian couple who had used it for several years after purchasing it in Melaque. They always had just a tourist visa for their winter visits.

As always what one hears or sees in the internet is subject to"local" interpretation.... If anyone can find the Official Rules for Jalisco it might clear this question up.

Lew from what I know as a permanent resident, you can't do it. Every car or vehicle I buy, I have to show residency. That said, it doesn't stop you from driving the car. Mexico insures by vehicle under one name (as well as the title) so anyone can drive the car with owner's consent.

Thanks for that and proving residency is not your Visa but a utility bill for and address is it not?
