Something missing in the bear discussion is the prevention part. The best way to avoid bear encounters is to avoid attracting them to your campsite in the first place. This means NO barbeques left outside, and no food or food scraps or garbage or fish guts or coolers or pots and dishes left outside. Most bear problems in campgrounds are human caused. Bears have an incredible sense of smell and are attracted by food related odours. Once they associate campsites with food then everyone has a potential bear problem in the future in that campground.
When on the trail or fishing, let the bears know you are around by making noise. Don't leave fish sitting on the ground nearby should you catch some.
I have spent decades camping and hiking in the bush and have never had a bear conflict because I go out of my way to try not to set conflicts up. I do carry a bear spray but have never used it.
