The bug population varies from year to year and place to place, even in the same months, and it certainly varies from month to month, week to week. I've spent some summers in Alaska without ever applying mosquito repellant and some others practically bathing in it. Always have some handy because you can really get eaten alive on short notice. If you are in heavily buggy areas keep moving, they will converge if you stop. Puffing on a cigar or cigarette helps too because of the smoke (not recommended). I noticed last summer that a friend of mine on the Kenai had a thermocell and he said it worked well....And of course staying near a moving stream helps because of the breeze.
