Hone Eagle, I don't believe it's gone. It was the weight of the trailer that will govern whether or not you need an AR.It used to be 10000 lbs and you need an AR but now I think its 11000 kilos(24,600Lbs) total weight of tow vehicle and trailer. What I meant was that it was taken off the books for anyone under the 11000 kilo weight. What got my dander up was that they lumped anyone over the 10 grand mark into the same category as a commercial driver and therefore had to get a medical, do a written test and a driving test every year. Sorry for not making it clearer and just to be on the safe side go to the MOT's web site and get the right info from them as I could have it wrong. I know I don't need the AR anymore.
I agree with some of the requirements to ensure drivers know what they are doing, but I also think that it's ridiculous that I have to get a class"D" license for a class A that also requires a medical every five years and a retesting of my "Z" the same as a commercial truck driver. Funny thing, my MH is registered as a passenger car.
I won't mind a written and driving test (plus "Z" endorsement) once to prove I can handle the vehicle (same as for a car), but the medical etc for non-commercial just doesn't makes sense. Also I've found they don't believe your doctor - I had a medical issue in 2009 which was identified on the medical (4 years before I applied for the "D") and my doctor stated it was not an issue any more. I was told that it had to be reviewed by "their" doctor and it would take six to eight weeks to determine if I would even be allowed to take the test.
When I did get clearance I found out that the computer records had not been updated and that it was nearly impossible to get them overridden with the update (three phone calls from Service ON in Cornwall to Toronto and two hours) before someone could provide the update - total time to be legal to drive the class A was over 4 months!
Just think I have to do this again in a couple of years!
