Reno to Yellowstone to Mt. Rushmore

Custer State Park was our base to visit Mt Rushmore. Turned out it was one of our very favorite stops ANYWHERE in the US. Big surprise and our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Agree with Big Game Lodge campground, but if you can't get in there, consider Grace Coolidge - here's my blog review: Custer State Park Campground, South Dakota
I also have a one day in Yellowstone blog post because we accidentally had one day in Yellowstone - not what I'd recommend but it worked for us late in September ... Yellowstone in One Day
