RMNP Traffic Delays-All Season

Question

A recent article in the local newspaper detailed that there would be delays this season on Trail Ridge Road for a 12 mile stretch, from the Alpine Visitors Center to Rainbow Curve. Park personnel will be doing road repair and resurfacing and delays of up to 20 minutes can be expected.

Given that 4.5 million people visited the park last year, and current visitaton rates are running ahead of that number, this will likely be significant for getting around on Trail Ridge.

Unfortunately that kind of work, along with much other maintenance work, has to be done during the same warm weather months most tourists are there.

Everything has a price. There was work being done on Trail Ridge road during my 2013 visit before the floods downstream. I was lucky to use the approaching roads before the destruction. It is amazing what Mother Nature can do.

Construction season at that elevation is June-October, although last year they were able to do some work into November, as it was unseasonably warm. The area that's included is way overdue for attention.

Just drove it this morning breezed right through except for a group of cyclists that stopped in the middle of the road to look at an elk. It looked in fair shape but it's been 20 years since I last drove it.

Thanks Thom,Missed the snow banks this year as it was still closed while we were there for Memorial Day.Utube if you wanted to see what you missed.IMHO a Beautiful drive all year long - but special while the snow is just everywhere.Flew out on Wednesday and son took the Girls up and Camped on Saturday, They loved it.Thanks for the info,
