road to Big Bend NP?

Would like a little advice on the road to Big Bend National Park from the I-10 near Ft. Stockton, TX. Also, any info on the campsites, security, etc. within the Park, those that can accommodate a travel trailer, 27' long. thanks-
  • I left Big Bend by that route but entered via 118 where I stayed at the intersection to terilingua. I would recommend that as a side trip to see old deserted ghost town, a dinner theater, and of course the beer drinking goat.

  • The Stillwell Ranch about 6 miles from the NE entrance has full hookups and good wifi. The full hookups are pull thru and plenty of room. We stayed there in Febr. and temps were in the 80s-90s then. It does require more driving than in the park. The owners and host are very friendly and will keep a good eye on your things while gone.We will stay there again when in the area. Check their website for more info.
  • I've pulled my fifth wheel on 385 to Big Bend many times. The road is good. Fuel up in Ft Stockton and Marathon. Diesel and gasoline are available near Panther Junction in BB, and gasoline at the Basin. There are only two places in BB that will accommodate your trailer: the NP campground at Rio Grande Village (no hookups of any sort, water is available, there is a dump) and at the concessionaire "campground" at Rio Grande Village - full hookups; the concessionaire campground is a large parking lot, but not too awful. It will be HOT at Rio Grande Village, not so bad in the Basin - which has no places that can accommodate your trailer. Vehicle break ins are fairly common in lightly visited areas, read the BB daily report and warnings. In the campgrounds and higher use areas your vehicle will probably be OK. Your main safety concern will be keeping hydrated.
