The road is closed for a couple weeks ever fall and every spring at the ferry crossings. The ferries get pulled out of the rivers in the Fall , road is then closed until enough ice has formed to build the ice roads across.
In the spring, the ice road is closed for a couple of weeks waiting for breakup, and then the ferries get put back in the rivers for the summer / fall season.
The spring time opening is around the beginning of June, there is no set date, it’s up to Mother Nature.

- SideHillSoupExplorerWe have the same trip in the planing for this year as well.
Word from buddies who used to live in Inuvik ( RCMP) and from what the NWT Hwy’s website says, is that Hwy 8 opens up “on average” the first week of June.
Hwy 8 ferry opening dates
Hope you guys have a blast on your trip!
