roads and weather in alaska

HI
We're planning on leaving for Ak in about a week, which should put us in Ak about mid June. I've heard theres still snow, slippery roads and cold weather up there.
. Can anyone give me a heads up on what the conditions are now and what I might expect in mid June ?
P.S. Whats the weather like in the Banff area, that will be our first stop
Thanks A million

  • I drove up from Omaha, NE, starting May 9, and the roads have been fine on the AK Hwy. I did encounter some slush on the White Pass on a side trip going into Skagway. I know that there was snow behind me around Fort Nelson according to the weather channels. But for the most part spring has finally arrived after what has been a long winter according to the locals.

I'm in Valdez heading to Wasilla today. Of more concern than snow and ice are frost heaves on the road. Regard the signs and slow down, and you'll be fine!
  • Northwest of Whitehorse the Alaska Highway is bare & dry. Sun is shining, snow is gone from the lower elevations, yesterday the temperature was 72F in the shade. Our forecast is better than it is for central & southern B.C.

But last weekend there was snow overnight.

With this much change in a week, I'm not willing to predict the weather 3-4 weeks from now.
