Rocky Point/Sonoita

Road Hazard. Coming from Lukeville crossing. (or if it applies elsewhere)
Those of you traveling to Rocky Point in the near future. In the town of Sonoita just over the Border on the Mexican side. As you make the right turn from Hwy 2 onto Hwy 8 , which is Benemerito de Las Americas heading towards Rocky Point. There is road construction and they are diverting traffic. For cars, it would appear that it is not a problem but for rv's it must be fairly tight cause here at the Reef we've had 2 rv's arrive with damage to the side of their rv. (One just yesterday and they were traveling in the daytime.)

The alternate route, is 16 de Septiembre which many of you are aware of. It parallels Hwy 8 and takes you around the congested area. The surface of that road is crappy but not congested.

Take a look at map quest. 16 de Septiembre is easy to find.

Juuuuuuuust a suggestion.
  • Here's another one. I forgot to post this. Benito Juarez , that would be Hwy 8 just as you come into Puerto Penasco/Rocky has been all torn up for awhile now. Just as you pass the Sams Club you'll get diverted. The road you get diverted to will take you to Playa Bonita and the Reef ok, but the surface is lousy and ya got alot of traffic , The Playa del Oro folks gotta do some maneuvering to get to their park.

The work around is the fairly new road to the beach area.

As you come into Rocky Point, at the first traffic circle you come to you'll see sign posts that say
"Sandy Beach" Cholla/Choya El Golfo de St Clarita". Turn right there. Follow that road over the railroad tracks to the stop sign.

Turn left at the stop sign and it takes you to the traffic circle with the Pemex station and from there its an easy drive to the beach area for Bonita and the Reef. Del Oro folks can get to their park just takes a little more maneuvering but easier than Benito Juarez at the Sams Club,

    Drive carefully.

Any word as to what caused the damage to the RVs?

Hitting stuff due to tight turns! The OP is correct. We got tangled up in the construction but were lucky enough to be led out of town by some very helpful locals and suffered no damage
