I take 11 different meds and supplements due to kidney disease/kidney transplant and related side effects. I carry at least 3 mos. supply with me as we travel for that long at a shot. If I was told "to only carry the exact amount that I would need for the trip" I would have to say "I'd be happy to officer if you would just tell me how long my next trip was going to be."
Never had an issue to date with the meds with multiple crossing of US, Canadian and Mexican borders. You just got someone with a bur in their saddle which could become an "issue" of anything they want to make of it.
