Need some information on cell phone usage to call US from Canada. Not worried about Alaska as our carrier has coverage there.

Access nearer the US 48 border has never been a problem. But I'm expecting reduced service on the way to Alaska. In fact I'm also expecting reduced service in Alaska.

According to this page on Verizon's web site, your $15 Canadian access is only for voice and text. Data is still at the global roaming rate of OMG! You can also add a global data plan of $25/month for 100MB.
