One thing to check on with fuel prices is if the company has a "customer loyalty" card to give discounts on fuel purchases. In Alaska, I know both Safeway (Carrs Safeway) and Fred Meyer stations give a nice discount based upon how much you have spent in the grocery stores operated by both. I find in Alaska, I will normally be given a 5 cent to dime discount per gallon on my fuel purchases when I buy my groceries before hand. Looking at the web site that Kidoo listed, for Fairbanks, they are showing $3.479 for unleaded. With the discount I normally receive, would make the price less than what I currently pay in South Florida. For many years, fuel in Alaska was the cheapest we would find on the trip, and it probably should still be. But the principle of "all the market will bare" is in full use up there. Millions of gallons of crude flow down the Alaska Oil Pipeline, there are refineries in North Pole and on the Kenai at Nikiski but retail prices are tied to the world market these days.
I carry a number of discount cards for stores not doing business here in South Florida, but that we use during summer travels. Helps save a few dollars.
Fred Myers, Frys and probably others are part of Kroger. I even saw a Circle K station that took the Frys card. Our Frys card is accepted at all of these stations.
Last summer on our Alaska trip we got $260 cash back (yes we spent a lot on fuel) with our 5% PenFed Cash rewards Visa card. Also no Canadian transaction fees on this or our Capital One card which gives 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Don't leave home without these or equivalent cards.
