My husband and I are planning a trip to AK this summer - we own a 34 ft Jayco but wanted something smaller to travel in, something that can be pulled by my jeep so we also just bought an 18ft r-pod, picking it up this week. We plan to travel to AK in this with our 2 golden retrievers, Winston and Dylan. Should be interesting! We will pull the TT with our Tundra, hopefully gas mileage will be better than the 9 mpg we get pulling larger trailer. We are downsizing for sure, but that should make travel easier, less complicated. As long as I have room for my camera and fishing equipment, I'll be happy. Our plans include a stay in Denali NP, at the Teklanika campground, a drive to the Arctic Circle, a week in Haines, Lake Louise and the wine county in Kelowna. We are so looking forward to the trip and hope to meet up with you other fortunate campers who are making the same journey.
Teklanika campground is a wonderfull place to explore Denali, you can up on up off the bus for your entire stay directly from the campground to explore some 80 miles road or close. We took 4 days, we might see mount Denali if we are lucky. Make sure you get the Tek pass, you can reserve it online, also make sure you reserve, Denali is a busy place. We reserved a few months ago.
The artic circle is nice but if you like the wilderness, make it to Deadhorse, it is a unique experience to drive the tundra for some 200 plus miles, mostly gravel from Coldfoot but it is a good road, Big rigs use it. You can touch the Artic Ocean, not very often you will have this opportunity to drive up this far to the north and you should see some Musk Ox, Fox, Cariboo, maybe a bear, and more.
Going down, as I see your plan, you will probably use the Casiar Highway, since you have a 4x4 I would not miss Salmon Glacier near Hyder Alaska, across the border from Stewart BC, and see some Grisly if you go late July, early August. You can drive up the road to the Glacier, the view is so unique, you are actually above the big Glacier just like you would be on an Airplane. I went when the sky was clear, this is the most beautiful Glacier I saw in my life.
Have a good trip, we might see you on the road.
