I totally agree that there are so many ways to see Alaska. My first experience was taking the maiden voyage of the Kennecott ferry from Bellingham through the Inside Passage to Juneau where we stayed with a Professor friend who had a home overlooking the water. We went out on his boat to check traps and saw whales. We also hiked to the glacier and took a commercial day trip by boat to Tracy Arm. We flew home to Houston, TX.
The second trip was in 2011 with our 16 foot Scamp trailer. That trip was more of an overview where we hit the more popular and well known spots. We sold the Scamp and took the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert on our return home. In 2012, we returned with our 19 foot Scamp trailer. We went back to some of the places we had been the previous year, but also branched out to more remote areas. A highlight was a day trip by commercial boat in Valdez.
We mostly boondock or stay in state, provincial or national parks. We don't spent much time in our trailer as we are out and about, driving back roads and checking out things that have been recommended to us or that we have read about.
This year we will return, leaving our Hattiesburg, MS home in mid June. We hope to take the ferry to some of the places which cannot be accessed by auto. Yesterday I mentioned that I had kept a blog for the two recent trips. Here is the link:

You will need to go to 2011 and scroll to the beginning. Also do the same for the 2012 blog.
